The Importance of Alcohol for Quality
At Pollenergie, we pay close attention to the quality of our manufacturing processes to ensure that our bee products are rich in active ingredients and to fully unlock their exceptional potential. From harvesting the raw materials to final packaging, every step is carefully planned. The alcoholic maceration of our poplar propolis, harvested from grids, is no exception!
The Role of Alcohol in Propolis-Based Products
Poplar propolis comes from the resin secreted by young buds to protect themselves from viruses, bacteria, fungi, molds, and moisture. To fulfill this protective mission, this plant substance is exceptionally rich in polyphenols and also possesses water-repellent properties. It is harvested by bees and then blended with wax to become propolis.
In order to extract all of its protective power, the alcoholic maceration stage of the propolis is essential. However, there is no question of turning a blind eye to the quality of the alcohol used and only paying attention to its alcohol content and its ORGANIC certification.
Many manufacturers have developed the habit of considering this aspect of the preparation as secondary and are negligent regarding it. Yet, it is the alcohol that highlights the true character of the plants and substances utilized in the preparation.
A Quality Too Often Neglected
The raw materials of neutral spirits are macerated in hot water to extract fermentable sugar residues (glucose/fructose). The liquid is then separated from the solid matter by filtration before alcoholic fermentation is launched by adding dry yeasts. This produces a kind of "hydroalcoholic mixture" which is settled and then stored to be distilled.

However, it is obvious that an alcohol resulting from the distillation of a natural wine or fruit will be much more suitable for transmitting and preserving life and the active principles of substances than an industrial alcohol. Even if its proof (alcohol content) is lower compared to neutral alcohol, its energetic quality is significantly higher and will yield an excellent quality hydroalcoholic solution.
To guarantee a high-quality propolis, Pollenergie has chosen to use a certified organic Cognac with a 65% alcohol content. It comes from the vineyards of Charentes to achieve a premium extraction of polyphenols and a hydroalcoholic solution with a 55% ABV. This is the foundation of our entire propolis product range.
