Focus on the carotenoids in fresh pollen

The role and benefits of these natural plant pigments

Carotenoids are natural, fat-soluble plant pigments found in many foods, including fresh pollen. They are responsible for their red, yellow, and orange colors. Although often overlooked, they play an essential role in the body! Among the best-known carotenoids are beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin.

What are carotenoids used for?

Carotenoids are not synthesized by humans, but they are important because some of them participate in the synthesis of Vitamin A in the body, an essential vitamin for humans. It plays an important role in vision, particularly in helping the eye adapt to darkness.

Vitamin A also contributes to bone growth, the regulation of the immune system, and the health of the skin and mucous membranes (eyes, respiratory and urinary tracts, intestines), which constitute our first line of defense against bacteria and viruses. Carotenoids offer numerous benefits to our body, particularly through their high antioxidant capacity, which helps protect our cells against certain stresses.

Benefits of carotenoids

  • They help fight oxidative stress and eliminate free radicals that damage our body.
  • They support immune function by stimulating the first natural or innate line of defense of the immune system (white blood cells).
  • They improve sun tolerance.
  • They stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment that gives the skin a beautiful tanned color.
  • They counteract the immunosuppressive action of UV rays.

A 2017 study published by the British Journal Of Dermatology reports the ability of carotenoids to protect our cells against UV rays. Several experiments have demonstrated the protective effect of carotenoids on the body by limiting the adverse effects of UV exposure (skin cancer, skin aging).

Fresh cistus pollen to prepare your skin for the sun

However, the effects of carotenoids are more effective when obtained through a dietary intake rich in colorful fruits and vegetables, rather than through dietary supplements. Cistus pollen, through its carotenoid content, strengthens skin pigmentation, significantly improves sun tolerance, and provides protection to the various tissues in contact with light (skin, eyes).

To best prepare your skin for the holidays, we recommend a course of fresh cistus pollen: one tablespoon daily, to be started at least three weeks before departure and continued, if possible, throughout the entire duration of your sun exposure.
